Hello Everyone! We have had a lot of changes since the last newsletter which include a new crew in our Bernina department, our new carpeting had to be replaced (it was defective), we now post weekly emails, and this newsletter.
From now on, we will be publishing a newsletter every 4 months. It makes financial sense, and it better fits our business and class calendars. If you would like to receive our emails, which most contain special coupons, just email Jeff at jpvlefty@aol.com.
Our business has been strong; we had record sales for August. Thank you for all your loyal support. There is a brighter and younger look in the Home Decorating fabric department. We have just the right fabric for that "stretch and staple" DIY project. The price of foam has finally come down a bit.
Spring fashion fabrics will be hitting the sales floor by the end of January. If you have not tried Scrap Therapy you should look into it. It is a great way to get out of the house and be with friends that sew... and you just might make something of which you can be proud.

WARNING About Transporting Machines in COLD Weather... Machines with electronics and circuit boards must be at room temperature before they are powered on. Turning on a machine that has been in the cold (like the trunk of your car) can result in circuit boards and electronic circuitry failing. If you have made an appointment for same day service, be sure to keep your machine indoors until you are ready to travel, and then place the machine in the passenger compartment so that it stays warm until you arrive at Hi Fashion Fabrics. Electronic machines that arrive colder than 60 degrees will not get same day service.

Hints from Home Dec…
A Note About Energy Efficiency To help you understand about the R value rating of window coverings, we thought an overview might help you choose the appropriate window covering to reduce your energy costs for many seasons to come. R value refers to the ability of certain materials to resist the transference of heat and cold between environments.
There is a lot of talk in these tough economic times about energy efficiency. Here are some quick check points to help you understand the R ratings of the most commonly used window coverings. Hi Fashion Fabrics offers several alternative window covering fabric and supplies that will help reduce your energy bills both in the winter months and the summer months.
According to studies cited in the most recent publication of The Vision Magazine here are the R ratings according to window covering types. Keep in mind that these window coverings also need an air pocket between the window itself and the covering to create an effective thermal barrier between environments.
|
Soft window coverings with linings and interlinings can increase energy efficiency by 300 percent. These are full length drapes that overlap in the center with the returns secured to the wall to prevent energy loss around the outer edges.
Hard coverings (shutters and blinds) have R values of 2.77-3.17
Shades (roman style or roller type) have R values of 2.6-5.0
Honeycomb or cellular have R values of 3-4.8
Natural Shades such as bamboo or rattans that are tightly woven have R values of 4.0-4.5
Solar screens such as those used in more contemporary settings have R values of 3.88-4.25 These shades are more effective in reducing heat gain than controlling heat loss!
Warm Window coverings have R values of 7
|
With these figures we hope that it is easier for you to choose the window treatment that best suits your home and energy controlling needs. We are trained to help you calculate the required materials to complete window treatments to reduce your energy bills. We also have resources to assist you with constructing your window treatments. Please visit us and inquire about the different window coverings that might work for you.

Bobbin Case Maintence
Maintaining the bobbin case in your sewing machine is easy. One of the most common problems people bring to me are tension issues relating to the bobbin case. Check your bobbin case each time you put in a new bobbin. Make sure that there is no lint built up inside the bobbin case. Lint and thread pieces inside the bobbin case will drag on the bobbin. Clean the bobbin case with a small brush and canned air. When you take your bobbin out of the bobbin case, make a loop with the thread and pull it back down the thread groove and out through the release end of the bobbin case tension spring. This will help to clean out lint that is built up under the tension spring. Bobbin case tension springs do wear out and need to be replaced every few million stitches.
When you put in a new bobbin, make sure that the bobbin turns freely within the bobbin case when you pull evenly on the thread. A bobbin case that has been dropped is easily bent and drags on the bobbin. Most bent bobbin cases can be made round again.
Try to use a bobbin case that is appropriate for the work you are doing. A Black Latch bobbin case is specially designed for work with heavy threads. A Gold Latch bobbin case is designed to increase bobbin tension during embroidery to prevent bobbin thread from showing in your embroidery designs. Also, over tightening a bobbin case spring will cause the tension area to collapse and the spring will need to be replaced.
Finally, bent bobbins and thread sticking out the side of a bobbin are also causes of many tension issues and even break needles. Before you seek help with your bobbin case, try a different bobbin. You do not need to bring in your machine to have me check your bobbin case tension. Just bring in the bobbin case and the bobbin that are trying your patience.
Keep sewing and may your thread never break!
